The incident in question took place towards the end of Wrexham’s record-breaking promotion push in 2022-23. With that campaign coming to a close, making every point precious, Phil Parkinson’s side played host to Yeovil at SToK Racecourse. McElhenney was joined at that game by his partner and fellow ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ cast members Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton. It was at this point that Mullin suffered a serious case of foot in mouth.

Mullin has said in his autobiography of being left red-faced in Olson’s company: “The next game, against relegation-threatened Yeovil on 18 April, was noticeable for another reason other than us getting three valuable points. It seemed like the entire cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia came over for the game. Well, I say the entire cast – Danny DeVito was absent. A pity, really, as I can’t think of anything more surreal than looking up into the stands and seeing Danny DeVito sat there. As I mentioned earlier, I’m a big fan of It’s Always Sunny, which made me a little bit tongue-tied when I met a few people afterwards. I was chatting to Rob McElhenney’s wife, Kaitlin Olson, about how the live touring version of It’s Always Sunny happened to be in Dublin at the time. ‘I know,’ she said, ‘I’m in it.’ I felt so stupid. I’d watched so many episodes of the show – I knew full well she was in it – and yet I’d said something totally daft like that. I’m like anyone else – sometimes you hear yourself asking a stupid question before you can even stop yourself, especially when you meet someone for the first time. Thankfully she saw the funny side.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Wrexham claimed a vital victory over Yeovil, with Mullin among the goals in a 3-0 win. That success left the Red Dragons on the brink of title glory, with promotion back into the Football League secured in their next fixture against Boreham Wood – with all of those exploits caught on camera for the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series.

Mullin has rubbed shoulders with Olson again since his embarrassing gaffe in North Wales, with the Wrexham squad enjoying an all-expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas in the summer of 2023 that saw McElhenney and his wife drop by at one stage. Parkinson’s side are hoping to have more cause for celebration in 2024 as they battle for promotion out of League Two.
